Are those micro-suction cups?

Check out this cool SEM image from former student Jason Roberts, showing tiny capsules in a hydrogel--the capsules collapse under vacuum and give the appearance of pores. This was captured on a tabletop SEM in the BME imaging lab. Read more of his work in his paper published in Journal of Materials Chemistry B "A Design Full of Holes"
